Executive Summary:
In November 2022, the Ministry of Health released what has become known as the “Councils” regulation, paving the way for an independent family council and an independent resident council in every long-term care home in BC. In April 2023, the ILTCCABC received a grant from the Provincial Government and quickly positioned itself to focus on assisting the Ministry of Health in reaching that goal, beginning with the development of independent councils where none exist and to assist long-term care homes and their families to transition from a staff-led resident council to a resident-led and a staff-led family council to a family-led council.
The ILTCCABC continues its work to help elevate the voices of residents, their families, and representatives; hearing and raising their issues and concerns and providing support and information as needed; and seeking needed system changes that will result in improvement in quality of care and quality of life for every resident residing in long-term care in BC, presently and in the future.
This report is the result of many hours of work gathering the concerns and systemic issues of residents, their families, and representatives from across BC.
