Media release by the Independent Long-Term Care Councils Association of BC (ILTCCABC)
Written by Lisa Dawson, President, ILTCCABC
The Independent Long-Term Care Councils Association of BC is pleased to announce that the Province of
BC has issued the ILTCCABC a grant of $300,000. ILTCCABC is extremely grateful to receive this grant to
assist the Ministry of Health with the shared goal of enhancing the voice of long-term care (LTC) residents
and family members, by providing volunteer support to local long-term care homes and their residents and family councils.
ILTCCABC is a registered society under the BC Societies Act. It is a provincial association of family councils
representing the collective voice of residents, their families and representatives. ILTCCABC is comprised of
its member Regional Associations of Family Councils, which operate in every health authority in B.C. on a
volunteer basis. ILTCCABC is viewed by the Ministry of Health as an important partner (stakeholder in the
long-term care sector). ILTCCABC contributes to the development and maintenance of self-directed
residents and family councils in LTC.
“The feedback that we get from family councils, groups of caregivers and family members of long-term care residents is absolutely vital to the work that the Ministry of Health does,” said Susie Chant, Parliamentary Secretary for Seniors’ Services and Long-Term Care. “Societies like the ILTCCABC give us valuable insight into the lives of long-term care residents, ensuring that the long-term care sector is held to a high standard that continues to deliver quality care to people who need it.”
The mission of ILTCCABC and its member regional associations of family councils is to improve the LTC
journey for residents, their families and the entire care home community. This is done by helping care home staff, families, and residents learn about, establish and maintain effective councils. ILTCCABC also provides resources to support councils, including regular meetings where regional family council forums can network, share ideas and discuss systemic issues. Issues discussed at these meetings can be elevated to the Ministry of Health.
ILTCCABC provides education sessions, inviting experts like the Alzheimer Society, Family Councils of BC,
and researchers to share their insights into resident frailty, provide support for family caregivers, and
offer opportunities for input into research on a variety of LTC challenges.
Individual councils receive ongoing one-on-one support from regional association volunteer members with lived experiences who have a broad understanding of LTC. These experienced volunteers also offer assistance and guidance to the LTC home team. They explain the various ways in which the LTC home can
support resident and family councils, thereby increasing the likelihood of a collaborative and respectful
working relationship between the LTC home and the council.
