Media release from the Independent Long-Term Care Councils Association of BC (ILTCCABC)
ILTCCABC was asked to weigh in on their lived experience as an organization largely comprised of family care partners on the topic of the state of long-term care in BC.
The recent interview with CITY News, Lisa Dawson, President of the ILTCCABC, endorses the Seniors’ Advocate concern for our current long-term care crisis.

What is ILTCCABC?
ILTCCABC is a provincial association of family councils* representing the collective voice of residents, their families and representatives in long-term care.
*A council is a group of residents in long-term care and/or their families, friends or representatives who meet to discuss ways they can contribute to the quality of life in their long-term care home by collaborating with their care team.
Who is ILTCCABC?
ILTCCABC is comprised of 5 member Regional Associations of Family Councils, which operate in every health authority in B.C. on a volunteer basis.
Why ILTCCABC?
The ILTCCABC mission is to promote Independent Councils in long-term care homes across BC; to support our member Regional Associations of Family Councils; and to advance the collective voice directly to the Ministry of Health, ensuring residents, their families and representatives have a voice in decisions that affect their lives and help shape BC’s Long-Term Care System.
What does ILTCCABC do?
ILTCCABC provides:
1. Resources
– To support councils, including regular meetings where regional family council forums can network, share ideas and discuss systemic issues. Issues discussed at these meetings can be elevated to the Ministry of Health.
2. Education
– Hosts education sessions for topics of interest to those with connections in long-term care
– Participates in research about long-term care
3. Support
– Volunteer members with lived experiences support the start-up, maintenance and sustainability of the council-care home journey.
